Why is it useful to have a defibrillator in use in pharmacies?

As a pharmacist, you come into contact with customers every day – some of whom have serious pre-existing cardiac conditions. They trust your expertise, your experience and your advice. In the same way, these customers rely on you to provide them with fast and competent aid in an emergency. Especially for elderly people or people with cardiac problems, the use of an AED can prove valuable in an emergency and significantly improve the victim's chances of survival.

What should be considered when using a defibrillator in pharmacies?

In an emergency, things need to happen quickly – and the operation of a life-saving “pulse generator” should be easy and intuitive. An automated external defibrillator (AED) is the right choice here because it is designed for use by “laypersons”. What else needs to be considered?

  • Concise instructions: The entire resuscitation process should be immediately understandable for everyone
  • Flexible performance: Sudden cardiovascular arrest can occur in both the young and the old. Ideally, the device should have a paediatric mode with reduced energy levels
  • Storage in a place easily accessible to the public: The device should be freely accessible to all – do not store it in locked cabinets. If necessary, it is possible to install it on the wall of your building, so that people can use it outside your opening hours

Can I get a subsidy for the cost of a defibrillator?

Whether the purchase of such a device is subsidised depends on various factors. Many German Länder provide financial aid for the purchase of an Automated External Defibrillator for lay use – however, the relevant funding guidelines must be observed, for example, the device must usually be installed in a publicly accessible location.

One thing is certain in any case: You take responsibility for the lives of others when you decide to purchase an AED.

Which defibrillators are best for pharmacies?

Which device is suitable for you as a pharmacist? We recommend the products from our HeartSave range: The HeartSaveAED or the HeartSaveAED-M.

Both products are easy and intuitive to use and guide the user safely through the entire resuscitation process with concise verbal prompts. By the way: All products of the HeartSave series come with a 6-year warranty ex works. We know and trust our AEDs so much that you can even optionally extend this warranty to 10 years.
